A new MultiCare Tacoma General Emergency Department opened May 18 in Federal Way.

The new emergency department is located at 29805 Pacific Highway South and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The 10-bed facility employs about 65 staff members from providers to registered nurses to ultrasound technicians and more.

Designed to provide the services of a sophisticated emergency room in an accessible neighborhood setting, the emergency department provides treatment of a wide range of complex illnesses and injuries from allergic reactions to broken bones; imaging services such as CT scans or ultrasounds; and full lab analysis services.

MultiCare’s new Federal Way emergency department accepts most insurance plans, according to the organization.

“With continued growth of the greater Federal Way community, we know it can be challenging to get emergency care quickly,” said Michael Mboob, executive director of off-campus emergency departments for the MultiCare Health System. The new location “offers a more accessible option for residents in the north part of Federal Way and beyond.”

The Tacoma General Emergency Department in Federal Way is part of MultiCare’s network of emergency services, including Mary Bridge’s Pediatric Trauma Center and the Tacoma General Level II Trauma Center.

Though there are nearby hospitals, MultiCare saw a need in the northern area of Federal Way, Mboob said. The facility’s goal is to have patients seen within 15 minutes of arrival and complete a patient’s stay within 90 minutes.

MultiCare’s system of health includes numerous primary care, urgent care and specialty services, such as MultiCare Indigo Urgent Care, Pulse Heart Institute and MultiCare Rockwood Clinic. The network of care includes 11 hospitals throughout Washington.
