Marie Callender’s in Federal Way closed its doors Sunday afternoon after the national restaurant chain declared bankruptcy.
On Monday, Perkins and Marie Callender’s Inc. announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Federal Way location at 31920 Gateway Center Blvd. had 35 employees.
The family-friendly restaurant, located next to the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, was a popular meeting place for local residents and organizations such as the Federal Way Rotary. A manager on duty said the announcement came as a shock to all employees Sunday, especially because the Federal Way location experiences a high volume of business.
Shortly before noon Monday, one customer with a group meeting scheduled at the restaurant walked away in disappointment. Two women meeting for lunch were surprised at the closure, with one saying the restaurant is always busy when she eats there.
According to the Associated Press, the company will close 65 stores and cut 2,500 jobs. The chain had three locations in Washington, including Northgate and Spokane, both of which also closed in mid-day June 12. A company spokeswoman could not be reached for comment Monday due to a full voicemail inbox.
