The Mirror is providing an opportunity for District 30 state representative candidates to speak to readers in their own words by answering questions related to Federal Way voters.
Candidates Katrina Asay and Carol Gregory answer the following question: Describe a successful accomplishment related to leadership, whether in public or private life, and how it relates to serving voters in the 30th District.

Katrina Asay
While mayor of the City of Milton the past seven years, I have been able to recruit and hire an extremely talented executive team. With their expertise and the cooperation of council, we have been able to pursue and complete an amazing amount of projects throughout our small city — from balancing difficult budgets, completing the Interurban Trail and construction of Water Wells to higher levels of public safety in fire, police and community events. One of my favorite projects was leading the design, fundraising and completion of the Veterans Memorial in our city. The project encompassed people from many, many different organizations and walks of life. The VFW Post 11401 was the backbone of the project. We recruited in-kind donations as well as financial donations from neighboring cities, tribes, businesses and citizens. After completion, we had a very successful dedication and the memorial was honored nationally. But more importantly, the memorial has become a place for people from miles around to remember and honor their loved ones and others that have served and sacrificed for our liberty. My skill and ability of bringing people together to work through very difficult and complicated issues and facilitating communication to accomplish goals is greatly needed in Olympia. These skills benefit everyone in the 30th District by facilitating partnerships that will get work done and problems solved.

Carol Gregory
Currently, I work at Burst For Prosperity. It’s a local initiative that helps people move from low-wage jobs to family wage jobs by gaining knowledge about personal finance, long-term opportunities and job-retraining programs. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people and families move through the program gaining newfound skills to set them on the path to financial stability. There is so much work to do to turn this economy around and put people back to work. We have to ensure our kids are prepared to compete in the global economy with strong K-12 schools, vocational training, community college programs and excellence in our four-year universities. The work I’ve done at Burst For Prosperity is a piece of a larger effort that’s needed to get people out of this recession and back to work.
