BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Decatur boys and girls beat Peninsula; Beamer sweeps Bethel

The Decatur Gators turned up the defensive pressure Friday night during a 73-29 blowout of the Peninsula Seahawks in Purdy.

The Gators (11-5 overall, 5-1 league) remained one game back of the South Puget Sound League 3A Division-leading Lakes Lancers. Decatur will host Lakes (6-0) on Feb. 1.

Friday night, the Gators held Peninsula to just two points in the first quarter and three in the third. Dom Hunter led three Decatur players in double figures with 19 points. Jerron Smith finished with 16 and Austen Wilson finished with 12.

In other basketball action:

Beamer boys 64, at Bethel 46 — The Titans dominated Bethel Friday night in Graham, rolling out to a 14-2 lead after the first quarter.

Beamer (5-8 overall, 4-6 SPSL South) got a huge scoring night from Thomas Rhodes, who finished with a career-high 31 points. Rhodes is averaging 17.4 points this season for the Titans.

The Titans also got 12 points each from Derek Brown and Andrew Maran.

at Beamer girls 63, Bethel 54 — The Titans used a balanced scoring attack Friday night to beat the Braves in Federal Way. Meghan Graf led Beamer with 23 points, Megan Huff finished with 14, Shyla Akins had 13 and Fantasia Johnson ended up with 10.

The win moved the Titans to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the SPSL South. They currently sit one win behind Bethel (6-5) for the fifth and final playoff berth from the South Division.

at Decatur girls 47, Peninsula 41 — Kayla Lipston finished with 22 points and keyed a second-half comeback during the win Friday night in Federal Way.

Peninsula bolted out to a 25-15 lead at the half, but the Gators (6-10 overall, 3-3 SPSL 3A) outscored the Seahawks, 32-16, in the third and fourth quarters. Alexis Cole finished with 16 points for Decatur.

at Kentwood boys 84, Jefferson 61 — The Raiders (4-11 overall, 1-10 SPSL North) couldn’t hang with Conquerors Friday night in Kent. Kentwood jumped out to a 45-22 halftime lead.

Jefferson was led by the 18 points of Daryon James and got 16 from Alex Merced.

Kentwood girls 55, at Jefferson 24 — The Raiders (6-8 overall, 5-6 SPSL North) were beaten up by league-leading Kentwood Friday night. Jefferson tallied only eight points in the first half and trailed by 23 points at halftime. Christy Kullberg led the Raiders with 11 points.
