The Federal Way branch of the Boys and Girls Club has swapped executive directors with the Ballard branch, sparking an outpouring of gratitude and frustration in the Seattle neighborhood.

Ballard residents rallied Monday night in support of Mark Hendricks, who spent 25 years at the helm of their local club.

Shelley Puariea, executive director of the Federal Way branch, will transfer to Ballard. According to MyBallard.com, Hendricks has accepted the position as Federal Way director. He was initially placed on administrative leave for “not following a direct order to move to the Federal Way club.”

MyBallard.com reports that Ballard residents are ready to welcome Puariea. However, they are disappointed in not having a voice in the decision. Several residents waved signs in support of Hendricks, and dozens of children showed up to express appreciation for his positive role in their lives.

The decision to change directors at both branches was made Sept. 7 in a private board meeting. Boys and Girls Club CEO Calvin Lyons told MyBallard.com that the transfer will “put the strengths where the strengths are needed.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Federal Way/Auburn serves youth ages 6 to 18. The club specializes in before and after school child care as well as drop-in sports and activities.
