PRIMARY ELECTION: Kochmar duels with Flygare for House; South King Fire levy is passing

As of Tuesday night, about 20 percent of ballots had been counted by King County Elections. Final results will be posted Aug. 21.

The Aug. 7 primary election results are in.

The top two candidates in each race will advance to the general election in November.

As of Thursday, Federal Way City Councilwoman Linda Kochmar was neck and neck with Democrat Roger Flygare for a first-place finish in the race for District 30 state rep., position 1.

For state rep. position 2, Katrina Asay was leading the pack with Federal Way City Councilman Roger Freeman in second place.

South King Fire and Rescue’s controversial levy is clearing the required 60 percent mark and is heading toward passage.

King County Elections is still counting ballots. Final results will be posted Aug. 21. Learn more at kingcounty.gov/elections.

Results as of Aug. 9:

District 30 State Rep., position 1

• Linda Kochmar (R): 26.53 percent (3,904 votes)

• Roger Flygare (D): 26.72 percent (3,931 votes)

• Thom Macfarlane (D): 19.83 percent (2,918 votes)

• Tony Moore (R): 19.34 percent (2,845 votes)

• Jerry Galland (R): 7.44 percent (1,094 votes)

Notes: Five candidates seek this state representative position being vacated by Mark Miloscia, a Democrat running for state auditor.

District 30 State Rep., position 2

• Katrina Asay (R): 47.17 percent (6,839 votes)

• Roger Freeman (D): 33.31 percent (4,830 votes)

• Rick Hoffman (D): 19.35 percent (2,806 votes)

Notes: For position 2, incumbent Katrina Asay, a former mayor of Milton, faces two challengers. Asay was elected to the state representative seat vacated by Skip Priest, who became Federal Way’s first elected mayor in 2010.

Congress, District 9

• Adam Smith (D): 61.36 percent (52,520 votes)

• Jim Postma (R): 22.54 percent (19,290 votes)

• Tom Cramer (D): 7.22 percent (6,178 votes)

• Dave Christie (D): 3.13 percent (2,679 votes)

• John Orlinski (R): 5.58 percent (4,772 votes)

Notes: Smith was first elected in 1996 to the U.S. House of Representatives. Four candidates are challenging Smith for his seat in the redrawn 9th District, which now stretches from Tacoma in the south to Mercer Island and Bellevue in the north.

South King Fire and Rescue levy

• Yes: 60.99 percent (11,087 votes)

• No: 39.01 percent (7,091 votes)

Notes: A 60 percent supermajority is required to pass. If approved, the levy will generate $3.5 million per year for four years. About $1 million will restore one emergency aid car to the fire district’s fleet. The rest will help cover the district’s budget gap and state-mandated cash reserves.

Governor (top two in King County)

• Rob McKenna (R): 35.06 percent (108,573 votes)

• Jay Inslee (D): 59.26 percent (183,534 votes)

Notes: The Seattle Times reports Inslee leads McKenna statewide.

King County Prop. 1

• Yes: 54.19 percent (160,990 votes)

• No: 45.81 percent (136,112 votes)

Notes: Prop. 1 is the Children and Family Services Center Capital Levy. The measure asks taxpayers to authorize a 7-cent increase for every $1,000 in property tax values. That amounts to about $14 a year on a home worth $200,000. The levy would collect the money for nine years, starting in 2013.

U.S. Senator (top two in King Co.)

• Maria Cantwell (D): 67.29 percent (206,287 votes)

• Michael Baumgartner (R): 23.14 percent (70,932 votes)

State auditor (King County results)

• Troy Kelley (D): 26.33 percent (72,938 votes)

• James Watkins (R): 33.81 percent (93,673 votes)

• Mark Miloscia (D): 12.81 percent (35,490 votes)
