The Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team will not roll through the 2008-09 season unbeaten. The Kentridge Chargers made sure of that Saturday night.

Kentridge, ranked 10th in Class 4A, knocked off the previously No. 1-ranked Eagles in Federal Way, 67-66. The loss by Federal Way came four days after beating fifth-ranked Kentwood on Tuesday in the loaded South Puget Sound League North Division.

Kentridge took advantage of breaking the suffocating Federal Way full-court press, and the threesome of Shaquielle McKissic, Gary Bell and Laron Daniels scored 50 combined points. McKissic led the Chargers (3-1 in the North) with 18 points and several monster dunks, and Bell and Daniels both tallied 16 points each.

But the Eagles (2-1) had a chance to steal the game in the fourth quarter, thanks to the 21 points of guard Michael Hale.

Kentridge had a four-point lead with a minute left in the game before Federal Way’s 6-foot-5 Jaleel Williams cut the lead to one point with a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left. McKissic made two free throws to extend the lead to three with 18 seconds left.

Federal Way had one last opportunity to tie the score, but opted for an open layup at the end instead of attempting a game-tying 3-pointer, and time ran out. In high school basketball, the game clock continues to run after a made basket.

Senior guard Jeff Forbes finished with 18 points, junior Cole Dickerson had 17 and Robert Christopher chipped in 12 points for the Eagles.

Federal Way played the game without starters Andre Barrington and Isiah Umipig and the 6-foot-10 J.T. Koontz.

The Decatur Gators continued their strong early season with a hard-fought 58-54 win over Emerald Ridge on Thursday night. The Gators (3-0, 4-0) got 26 points from Marcus Tibbs and 10 points from sophomore Jerron Smith.

Decatur took over the No. 1-ranking in the Seattle Times’ Class 4A state rankings after previously top-ranked Federal Way lost to Kentridge. The Gators played a huge SPSL South game last night in University Place against Curtis (after press time).

Jefferson improved to 3-1 in the North Division and 4-1 overall with a pair of wins over Tahoma and Kentlake last week. The Raiders downed Tahoma Saturday, 72-40, and Kentlake, 71-55, Thursday.

Jefferson got contributions from just about everybody on their roster during the two wins. The Raiders got points from nine players against Tahoma and 10 players scored against Kentlake.

TJ was led by the 14 points of Dahir Ibrahim against Tahoma and got 15 points from Xavyr Moss against Kentlake.
