Federal Way American/National wins District 10 Junior Little League crown

A combined team of all stars from Federal Way American and Federal Way National Little Leagues took home the District 10 Junior Little League championship Sunday afternoon. The Junior Little League division is for players 13 to 14 years old.

The rivals during the regular season joined forces for the postseason and beat a combined team from Auburn and Bonney Lake/Sumner at Brannon Park in Auburn in the championship game Sunday, 14-2. The Federal Way American/National team now advances to the 2009 Washington State Junior Little League Tournament in Yakima. The state tournament kicks off July 25.

The Federal Way American/National team began the week-long tournament with a 13-3 win over the same Auburn/Bonney Lake/Sumner team they beat in the title game.

Mitch Stewart pitched a complete game while Zach Hobbs, Nate Smith and Jim Sullivan each contributing three hits and two RBIs each. Federal Way broke open a close game with seven runs in the fifth inning to close out the game.

They followed with a 7-1 victory over Chinook Little League, led by J.D. Cochran’s complete-game, four hitter on the mound. Stewart led the offense with three hits and two RBIs and Evan Elliott also drove in three runs.

American/National followed with a 19-6 thrashing of Kent in the semifinals to earn the berth in championship. Sullivan, Elliott and Jeffrey Lusink each had four hits. Nate Smith and Kyle Robbins each added three hits and Lyle Tokioka added three RBIs.

In the champoionship round, the Bonney Lake/Sumner/Auburn team battled back through the loser’s bracket and upended Federal Way, 7-3, to force a deciding game later in the day.

Federal Way used a two-hitter by Lusink to win the title. Lusink also led the offense with four hits and three runs, while Elliott and Smith added three hits and Sullivan had two run-scoring doubles.

For the tournament, Sullivan led the team with 14 hits and 10 RBIs, while Lusink and Smith added 11 hits. Elliott had ten hits and led the team with ten runs.

“You don’t socre that many runs without contributions from the whole team,” said head coach Bob Clinton. “Throughout the tournament, the team also ran the bases extremely well and played strong defense. The players from the different leagues came together extremely well and it was if they’d been playing together all year. They were a talented bunch of kids who are great young men and very easy to coach.”

The team is made up of Federal Way American players JD Cochran, Evan Elliot, Zach Hobbs, Jeffrey Lusink, Nate Smith, Mitch Stewart, Lyle Tokioka, Brandan Harrelson and Sam Potts, along with Federal Way National players Jim Sullivan, Kyle Robbins and Mark Haver. Clinton is assisted by Randy Elliot and Jerry Stewart.

In other Little League all-star tournament action:

• The marquee all-star tournament kicks off July 11 at Sunset Park in Auburn. The 2009 District 10 Little League All Star Tournament for 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls includes all 11 teams from Federal Way, Kent, Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Renton, Maple Valley, Puyallup and Northeast Tacoma. The tournament ultimately culminates at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., in August.

Steel Lake, Federal Way American and Federal Way National Little Leagues will be vying for the District 10 championship. Steel Lake will take on Soundview Little League at 6 p.m. in their opening-round matchup.

Federal Way American opens up against Kent and Federal Way National’ plays thair first game against Bonney Lake/Sumner.

All three games are scheduled for July 11 in Auburn.

The Steel Lake Little League All-Star Team includes Bryce Blanchard, Brandon Bowman, TJ Byrne, JC Cater, Alec Chanes, Tristan Coppinger, Danny Jones, Travis Layden, Jonathan Stewart, Caleb Wallen, Dashay Ware and Kendan Worley. The team is coached by Nate Bowman and Doug Coppinger.

The Federal Way National team includes Max Dalrymple, Dax Wallat, Markus Montelongo, Lawyer Braun, Garrett Westberg, Zachary Nunez, Taylor Davis, Kepa Sharpe, Jon Charbonneau, Scott Sunitsch and Billy Fitzpatrick. The team is coached by Brian Westberg and Tom Wallat.

The Federal Way American team includes Bridger Armstrong, Jeffrey Cochran, PJ Covello, Czarelle Galapon, D’Jimon Jones, Ben Koler, Jacolby Nokes, Donny Phelps, Corey Saeda, JP Wilson, Keegan Woods and Jake Zwaller. The team is coached by Lance Koler, Micke Cochran and John Nokes.
