One out of three students will drop out of school or run into trouble.

That’s where Communities in Schools of Federal Way plays a critical role. CIS fosters healthy partnerships between adult volunteer mentors and students in elementary through high school. The biggest result: More kids stay in school and learn to succeed in life.

CIS Federal Way hosted its 13th annual fundraising breakfast Feb. 24 at the Christian Faith Center. The fundraiser exceeded a goal of $50,000. Executive director Tracy Oster said the proceeds will help CIS continue to grow its programs, especially in the area of school outreach coordinators.

Sid White was named the 2012 Tom Murphy Mentor of the Year for his work with James DiLeonardo, a student at Federal Way High School. White has been a mentor with Communities in Schools for about five years.
