Make Music Day, the annual worldwide festival of making music to celebrate the longest day of the year, returns Wednesday, June 21.

The world’s largest annual music event celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in everyone, regardless of age or skill level. Last year, 104 U.S. cities organized 3,819 free Make Music events on June 21, including in Federal Way.

Locally, Make Music Federal Way is preparing the sounds and tunes for this year’s event.

For the fifth year in a row, Make Music Federal Way is presenting a musical event with a wonderful breakfast. The Federal Way Lions Club is planning the Make Music Federal Way Festival to celebrate the first week of summer.

The “Flapjacks at Jimmy Mac’s” fundraiser hosted by the Federal Way Lions Club is from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Jimmy Mac’s Roadhouse (34902 Pacific Highway South in Federal Way).

Joe Conner will kick off the mini-concert with a solo, followed by the mellow sounds of Bonnie Steinkamp on harp. Federal Way Lion Daniel Harrington, the trumpet player from Emerald Downs, will follow along with the Jonescheit family singers. The fundraiser closes with Irish Step dancing presented by a team from Fire and Ice Dance Studio.

The breakfast is only $10 and includes flapjacks, sausage, coffee, eggs and juice.

New this year, Federal Way City Councilmember Jack Walsh will sing a solo outside at the SubZero Nitrogen Ice Cream Shop at 10 a.m. on Make Music Day. Federal Way community member Roger Flygare will play tambourine at noon with troubadours at the stair steps of the Performing Arts and Event Center in Federal Way.

Launched in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day has become a global phenomenon with participants from more than 1,000 cities around the world.
