The Seattle Seahawks are partnering with six local school districts in Washington to jump start girls flag football club teams.

Of the six school districts to receive funding for teams, Federal Way Public Schools was named one of the districts. All four high schools will receive around $3,800 in funding to initiate their clubs. Federal Way, Decatur, Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer will all participate and have clubs teams in 2023.

Federal Way, Kent, Mercer Island, Highline, North River and Oakville are the six districts that are getting assistance from the Seahawks. Previously in 2022, the Seahawks reached out and supported Tacoma Public Schools and Seattle Public Schools with their own girls flag football clubs. With this batch of teams, the total number of clubs is 33.

The $57,000 comes from a 2022 Seahawks commitment of $250,000 over the next five years to “support the creation of high school girls flag football programs across the state,” according to a press release.

“We are excited to launch high school girls flag football this coming fall and are grateful to the Seattle Seahawks for providing the support necessary to launch this program well,” said Federal Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer. “Athletics are an important part of the educational experience, teaching sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and helping scholars feel connected at school. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow and increase our athletics offerings for scholars. I can’t wait to see them play their first game!”

The schools will receive an equipment kit from USA football and two uniforms, home and away, courtesy of Nike. The Federal Way School District plans to start its clubs next year with the season beginning in December.
