A Federal Way High School educator has been accused of having inappropriate relationships and communications with students at the school.

The man is not being named in this report because he has yet to be criminally charged, but police documents identify him as an educator with AmeriCorps and part of the high school’s AVID program.

AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a “college preparation program targeting students in the academic middle that have a strong desire to go to college and a willingness to work hard,” according to the district website.

Police reports indicate that an investigation began on the suspect after a student reported to administrators that the man had touched her waist and buttocks during an AVID program banquet on June 8.

Police interviewed the student who reported the educator’s inappropriate behavior with the victim’s mother present.

The student told police that her and girls at school would frequently skip class to socialize with the accused teacher in his classroom.

While the student said she originally enjoyed the educator’s company, he eventually began making inappropriate comments to her and other students regarding sexual topics, according to police documents.

According to police documents, he allegedly talked about what kinds of pornography he enjoyed in front of students, and he spoke about his own sexual history and details about his sexual relationship with his fiancé.

The teacher also reportedly mentioned places on the campus of the high school where sex could be had out of view of school security cameras. According to police interviews with witnesses, he also allegedly drank alcohol with a student at his apartment and offered to smoke with students.

Chief of Communications for the Federal Way School District, Whitney Chiang, claimed that the educator was never employed by the district and rather “an AmeriCorps volunteer assigned to one of our school buildings.”

“As soon as these allegations were reported, the individual was immediately escorted off campus and has not returned to any of our campuses we then immediately reported the information to the Federal Way Police Department, Child Protective Services, and AmeriCorps,” said Chiang. “Student safety is our highest priority, and we take any allegations impacting student safety very seriously.”

The suspect was not arrested, according to police documents. The reporting officer recommended that the man be charged with communicating with a minor for an immoral purpose.
