The National Safe Boating Council, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, reminded everyone this week is National Safe Boating Week.
In particular, the NSBC and NWS wanted to remind boaters of the dangers of drinking and boating. In a news release, the agencies reminded potential boaters that “the effects of alcohol can be even more hazardous on the water than on the land.” Boating Under the Influence, or BUI, “affects judgment, vision, balance and coordination.” The agencies report that approximately one-third of all boating fatalities are the result of boating under the influence.
The agencies also reminded boaters that operating a boat while intoxicated can result in “fines, suspension or revocation of your driver’s license, and even jail time.”
