1 person injured in semi truck collision in Federal Way

Pacific Highway South was closed for several hours, resulting in major traffic backups.

One person was injured in a three-vehicle crash along Pacific Highway South on Monday afternoon, which caused major traffic backups in Federal Way.

At about 3:20 p.m. Dec. 13, Federal Way officers and South King Fire & Rescue crews responded to an injury accident involving two sedans and a semi truck at the 36600 block of Pacific Highway South, according to Cmdr. Tracy Grossnickle of Federal Way Police.

A vehicle heading northbound stopped on Pacific Highway South to turn left into Spring Valley Montessori School when they were rear-ended by another sedan, forcing the first vehicle into the oncoming lane.

The driver of the semi truck with no trailer heading southbound steered right to avoid a head-on collision, clipping the sedan, Grossnickle said. The semi driver lost control, crossed the centerline and drove down a ravine.

One of the occupants in the sedan was extricated from the vehicle and transported to St. Francis Hospital with leg injuries, Grossnickle said.

Pacific Highway South was shut down in both directions from the 35900 block to the 37300 block for an extended period of time while Washington State Department of Transportation cleaned a significant amount of oil and fluid off the roadway.
