Two boys were rescued from a storm drain on Thursday after they were sucked underwater by the current, according to police.

At about 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11, Federal Way Police and South King Fire and Rescue crews responded to the 34000 block of Pacific Highway South for a report of two kids in a storm drain at the Kitts Corner Apartments.

When police arrived, they determined the two 12-year-old boys were playing in a wooded area near a stormwater runoff when they were sucked underwater by the current, said Cmdr. Raymond Bunk of FWPD. The heavy rainfall created streams with a strong current in the wooded area, police said.

The boys were pulled through a tube into a cylindrical concrete overflow and they were found in the concrete basin clinging to a ladder, Bunk said. The weight of the basin cover prevented the boys from exiting the basin on their own.

Officers Travis Tilford and Lee Price, along with apartment maintenance workers, removed the iron cover and rescued the two boys. One of the boys was treated by fire crews for a minor cut to his leg, Bunk added.

Maintenance crews are investigating the incident.
