“Zing Go the Strings: A Concert of Latin Music and Dance” features two outstanding musical trios, Carmona Flamenco and Correo Aereo.
They will perform a thrilling concert of Spanish-themed music and dance at 8 p.m. April 18 at the Knutzen Family Theatre. The program has been produced for the Knutzen by Town Hall Seattle as part of its Zing Go the Strings Touring Project that showcases the finest string players and ensembles in the Puget Sound area.
Correo Aéreo (Air Mail) is a world music trio performing traditional music of Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina. Highly-skilled musicians Abel Rocha, Madeleine Sosin and Evan Flory Barnes combine silken harmonies and an unusual array of stringed and percussion instruments with a rich mastery of traditional rhythmic patterns and song. Hailed for their musical virtuosity and their original interpretations of folkloric music, Correo Aéreo takes audiences on an unforgettable journey into the sonic riches of Latin America, a magical world blended from indigenous rhythms, passionate adventures, nature and the poetry of life and death.
Correo Aéreo, formed in Santa Fe, N.M. in 1992, tours nationally and internationally, appearing in concerts, festivals, and clubs, as well as writing scores for films. Locally, they have appeared as featured artists at Town Hall, Northwest Folklife, and were recently commissioned to do a new work for the Seattle International Children’s Festival. Currently, they are working on a new CD and preparing to go out on tour again, first to Amsterdam and Belgium.
Joining Correo Aereo on the Knutzen Family Theatre stage will be the dynamic Carmona Flamenco Trio. Award-winning Carmona Flamenco has made extensive concert, festival, and cabaret appearances throughout Spain and the United States. Often performing with guest artists, Marcos and Rubina Carmona’s ensemble specializes in contemporary and traditional flamenco music, dance, and song. The Carmona Trio is a special small touring group featuring guitarist Marcos, vocalist Rubina, and dancer Ana Montes.
The Carmonas have appeared in Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Alicante, and Huelva, as well as San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, B.C., Portland, Tampa, and Los Angeles. Currently based in Seattle, Carmona Flamenco has become one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier performance groups.
Carmona Flamenco has performed to sold out houses at Kirkland Performance Center, ArtsWest Playhouse, Portland Performing Arts Center, Renton Carco Theater, Museum of History and Industry Theater, Vancouver, B.C. and Eastside Cultural Theater as well as many others.
