Two Federal Way residents escaped a house fire early Wednesday morning, but their dog and ferret did not survive, according to fire officials.

At about 5:05 a.m. July 14, South King Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to reports of light smoke in the bedroom with an alarm sounding near the 2600 block of SW 337th Street in Federal Way, according to Capt. Brad Chaney of South King Fire.

Two minutes later, the call was upgraded to a residential fire, and more units were dispatched to the scene.

On the scene, crews discovered a house consumed in flames with fire coming from the second story in both the front and back of the house, Chaney said.

There were two people in the home. The man escaped the home safely, but the woman was trapped on the roof of the garage when firefighters arrived.

The first arriving crew placed a ladder against the home and helped the woman down. Both the woman and the man were transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.

The residents’ pets — a dog and a ferret — did not survive the fire, Chaney said.

The cause is under investigation by the King County Sheriff’s Fire Investigation Unit.
