Bail was set at $500,000 Thursday for Lagrant D. Pegram, the suspect in a Dec. 29 fatal collision in Federal Way.

In setting the bail, King County Superior Court Judge Richard Bathum said the bail amount was moderate, given Pegram’s history of DUIs.

Pegram, 35, of Auburn, was booked into King County Jail on Dec. 29 following the two-car collision at Pacific Highway South and South 320th Street. Pegram, while traveling in a Suburban northbound on Pacific Highway South, allegedly ran a red light at approximately 2:20 a.m. and collided with an Acura, driven by Federal Way resident Emmanuel Franco, who was traveling westbound on South 320th Street.

Franco, 21, died at the scene. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office listed Franco’s cause of death, on Thursday, as aortic transection due to lacerations of the liver and spleen and multiple verb fractures due to blunt force trauma to the trunk.

According to a statement of probable cause written by officer Adrienne Purcella, Pegram was given a field sobriety test and a breath test at the scene of the accident. Test results showed Pegram’s blood alcohol level at .242, according to the statement.

Federal Way police have recommended Pegram be charged with vehicular homicide. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has until Jan. 3 to file the charge.
