Following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:

May 18

Assault: At about 6:30 a.m. at 34515 9th Ave. S., police responded to an assault at St. Francis Hospital. When a nurse was performing her routine duties, a patient attacked her. The patient grabbed the nurse’s throat, broke her necklace and continued to claw at her neck. The nurse was able to stop the assault by grabbing the patient’s wrists, and by then, more staff came to assist in restraining the patient.

Jaywalking: At about 9:55 a.m. at 32000 Pacific Highway S., a woman reported she had been hit by a vehicle while crossing the street near Pacific Highway and South 320th Street. The woman said she had been struck, but the car continued driving. She complained of pain in her left leg, but refused help from South King Fire and Rescue personnel. Safe City cameras captured the woman jaywalking on the street at the noted location, but video surveillance revealed she was not hit by any vehicle. The woman has a history of reporting unsubstantiated incidents in the police in the past. She was given a courtesy ride to St. Francis Hopsital.

Groceries: At about 1:48 p.m. near the 2100 block of SW 336th Street, a man walked out of the Safeway store with a shopping cart full of items that cost a total of $432.96. The elderly man was wearing a black baseball hat, red shirt and blue jeans. Safeway’s store manager confronted the man in the parking lot and was able to retrieve all of the stolen items. The man left in a white Ford truck, and after police ran the vehicle’s plates, the registered owner did not match the description of the suspect.

Child left alone: At about 5:04 p.m. near the 1400 block of South 320th Street, officers responded to reports of a 6-year-old child left alone in a hotel room. Upon arrival, the officer found a young boy in the hotel room. The boy said he was alone and waiting for his mother to return from work. Roughly 15 minutes later, the mother arrived and angrily stated the boy was her son. Over the next several minutes, the mother proceeded to say how much she hated her son and that she didn’t want him anymore. The boy looked physically healthy, although appeared very afraid of his mother. Officers noted the tone, demeanor and hatred with which the mother spoke to the boy was concerning, and the incident was reported to child protective services.

May 19

Reckless driver: At about 10 a.m. along Military Road South, a woman drove her car against instructions of a traffic control flagger and almost struck several vehicles, putting the flagger’s safety at risk. The woman drove directly at one of the on-site FWPD officers. She was instructed to pull over and when she did, she got out of her car, screaming obscenities and acting in a violent manner. After the officer was able to detain the woman in handcuffs, she continued screaming and spitting at the officer.

May 21

Vandalism: Around 6:34 p.m. at near the 33400 block of SW 334th Street, a FWPD vehicle used to deter crime became a victim to a crime when a witness reported seeing four young men, possibly teenagers, kicking and assaulting the unoccupied cruiser. The suspects were gone by the time FWPD arrived on scene. There was significant damage to the vehicle, including dents and broken windshield wipers. The witness who reported the incident is unknown.

May 23

Spit: At about 3:08 p.m. near 1095 S. 324th St., police responded to a dispute at Celebration Park. Upon investigation, officers found a man had spit in another person’s face after recklessly driving through the parking lot. The suspect was arrested without incident.

May 24

Drive-by shooting: At about 12:02 a.m. near the 3000 block of Pacific Highway South, officers responded to a drive-by shooting at the California Burrito restaurant. Upon officers’ arrival, both the suspect’s and the victim’s vehicles had fled the scene. Officers were able to locate the victim’s vehicle. The occupants were uninjured, but there were two bullet holes in the vehicle.

May 26

Fled the scene: At about 12:13 p.m. near the 3000 block of Pacific Highway South, a man fled the scene of a traffic collision, leaving behind a firearm in the vehicle. The man then assaulted a female and her child while attempting to escape police. The man was later captured and found to be a convicted felon. He also had a switchblade knife. Police arrested the man, who was then taken to the station and processed for a DUI after a search warrant for blood samples was obtained.

White van: At about 3:30 p.m. near the 2600 block of SW 332nd Court, a man reported his children had seen a white van park in front of their residence and a heavy set man with facial hair exited the van. The man then began to take photos of the home and the vehicles parked out front. The kids said the man then knocked on the door of the residence and checked the door knob when no one answered. The male then attempted to gain entry to the backyard through a gate. At this time, the children released their dogs outside, causing the man to run off. There was no missing or damaged property at the residence.

Testing his camo: At about 5:30 p.m. near South 338th Place, a man was walking in the wooded area near the BPA Trail in full military regalia “testing his camo” when he thought two young kids on dirt bikes fired two shots toward him from a small caliber pistol. The man did not see a gun and could not see the kids through the wood line at the time he thought he was fired at, although he was adamant the sound was gunfire. An officer walked the trails/wooded area with the man and found no evidence to support the claim.

Fraud: From May 18 through May 27, about 114 fraudulent unemployment claims have been reported to the Federal Way Police Department.
