‘Mischief and mayhem’ take Centerstage in eclectic theater season

Save on season tickets for Centrestager Theatre 2019-20 performances

As Centerstage Theatre celebrates the successful spring run of Bye Bye Birdie, Managing Director Angela Bayler is excited to share what’s planned for the 2019-20 season – a playful tribute to mischief, mayhem and merriment!

And great news for theater fans: Early bird season tickets will provide great savings on some of the stage’s favourite productions, selected by Artistic Director Trista Duval!

“I’m excited about the whole season – Trista does a great job of selecting plays and I think she’s really included something for everyone,” Bayler says. “We’re also proud to be working at increasing diversity, both on stage and behind the scenes.”

Here’s what’s coming up

Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles opens the season Oct. 4 to 27 before seasonal celebrations bring the holiday panto Robin Hood Nov. 30 to Dec. 22.

From Jan. 31 to Feb. 23, the Centerstage team is proud to present the world premier of Let There Be Love, by playwright Mrinalini Kamath, a mash-up of D.H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche, and the debate of online dating versus matchmaking.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels welcomes spring March 27 to April 19 before the season closes with the Oscar Wilde classic The Importance of Being Earnest, May 22 to June 14.

A community-focused professional theater company

Founded in 1977 by Sharon and Norm Munsey, Centerstage Theatre is focused on sharing a passion for quality theatre with the South Sound region, from its home at the Knutzen Family Theatre.

“We really focus on sharing the joy of theatre with audiences and the greater community,” Bayler says, pointing to this year’s “mischief, mayhem and merriment” theme. While some performances aren’t necessarily designed for young children, all are selected with the idea of being family-friendly.

“We really believe in being part of the community, so we have a variety of education and community outreach programs.”

  • Page to Stage – High school classes study the source material of one of Centerstage’s plays, interact with actors and designers via social media throughout rehearsals, then come enjoy a free performance.
  • High school interns – A great opportunity for youth interested in theatre, whether as a career or hobby, to mentor with a Centerstage professional. The most recent performance of Bye Bye Birdie featured 10 interns onstage and two working behind the scenes.
  • Summer education classes – Watch the Centerstage Facebook page for theatre classes coming up this summer!
