Police arrested a Federal Way man on Tuesday night who allegedly shot a newspaper delivery man multiple times on Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the shooting at about 3 a.m. on May 25 near the 31600 block of 37th Ave. SW in the Twin Lakes area of Federal Way. They located 39-year-old Travis Zimmerman lying in the street and he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Officer rendered first aid until fire personnel arrived and eventually transported the man to Harborview Medical Center in serious, but stable condition.

Zimmerman provided police a description of the suspect vehicle and a brief synopsis of what had occurred before being transported, according to police. He told police as he was delivering newspapers in the Twin Lakes neighborhood he noticed a small white pickup truck following him. He told police he didn’t think much of it because “it happens regularly due to the fact he darts up and down the streets to make his deliveries,” so he continued on his route.

He noticed the same vehicle a few more times and then decided to confront the driver and inform him that he was delivering papers. As he exited his vehicle, the suspect driver fired multiple rounds from a handgun, striking the victim multiple times, according to Federal Way police.

According to the Federal Way Police report, Zimmerman was shot in the face, jaw, both legs, and the buttocks and groin area.

The report reads in part that Zimmerman had stepped out of his car to tell the white male truck driver that he was delivering newspapers in the area when the male produced a gun.

Zimmerman was then shot while he was trying to take cover, the report states.

Zimmerman was also on the phone with his girlfriend at the time, and she allegedly told police she heard the gunshots followed by Zimmerman shouting, “You shot my face,” the report reads in part.

Officers identified a possible suspect based on the vehicle description. Police personnel located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in the area at the time of the incident utilizing Safe City cameras.

The Criminal Investigations Section was able to identify the vehicle from multiple surveillance video recordings, in cooperation with the residents of the Twin Lakes neighborhood, and local business owners, police said.

SWAT and Special Investigation Unit detectives conducted hours of surveillance at the suspect’s Federal Way residence until at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night when the suspect was arrested, without incident, as he exited his residence, police said.

During a subsequent interview of the suspect, he confessed to his involvement in the incident.

He was booked at SCORE jail and faces charges of first-degree assault.

A family friend of Zimmerman has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the family’s financial challenges during this time. So far, the page has collected $19,920 in donations of the $25,000 goal.
