Federal Way Public Schools’ Lake Grove Elementary PE teacher, Dana Henry, has been named the 2018 Elementary School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and Lake Grove Elementary has been selected for the 2018 Physical Activity Leadership Award from Washington’s Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE). These awards were presented on Oct. 12 at the SHAPE Washington conference.
“Lake Grove is privileged to have Dana Henry lead our scholars in physical and health wellness with programs such as Mighty Milers,” said Yolanda Heidelberg, principal at Lake Grove. “As principal, I am proud to be a part of this great team.”
Henry continuously exceeds state/national standards with a focus on rhythm, motor and social emotional skills. She strives to incorporate technology, such as pedometers, into her curriculum, and offers before and after school opportunities for scholars.
Lake Grove earned the Physical Activity Leadership Award for its exceptional focus on incorporating health and physical activity into a wide variety of programs that get students and staff moving throughout the school day and beyond.
“Lake Grove Elementary continues to foster a healthy culture,” said Henry said. “Staff members go above and beyond their teaching responsibilities to lead and support activities before, during, and after school that get our students moving and improve their overall health, school connectedness, and readiness to learn.”
