GYMNASTICS: Jefferson and Decatur headed back to state championships

The Federal Way school district will have two teams representing it at the State Gymnastics Championships Friday and Saturday inside the Tacoma Dome's Exhibition Hall.

The Federal Way school district will have two teams representing it at the State Gymnastics Championships Friday and Saturday inside the Tacoma Dome’s Exhibition Hall.

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders and Decatur Gators both finished in second place in the team standings at last weekend’s District Championships. The Raiders (169.7) ended up behind Emerald Ridge (176.375 points) at the Class 4A district meet Saturday at Mount Rainier High School and the Gators finished behind Enumclaw in the Class 3A meet.

The Raiders’ return to the four-team Class 4A team championships after a one-year absence. Jefferson was edged out of a state berth last season by a little over a point by Mount Rainier.

Jefferson senior Monica Church led the way for the Raiders. She finished fifth in the all-around (35.5) and also tied for third on the floor exercise with a 9.6.

Joining Jefferson and Emerald Ridge in the four-team race for the Class 4A team title will be Woodinville and Newport. Woodinville won the District 2/4 championship with 177.3 points, followed by Newport (170.4).

Federal Way will have one gymnast at the Class 4A state meet. Tia Thomas tied for third on the floor exercise Saturday with a 9.6 and will compete in the event in Tacoma. Beamer’s lone representative at state will be Carissa Clark, who will compete on the vault.

This will be Decatur’s first appearance as a team at the eight-team Class 1A/2A/3A State Gymnastics Championships. The Gators have competed before at the Class 4A meet and finished in second-place back in 1995.

This year’s Decatur team finished with 168.65 points during the district meet at Mount Rainier Saturday. Enumclaw dominated the meet with 179.425 points and also having four of the top-five finishers in the all-around.

The Gators were led by Anna Paradee and Allison Sherwin.

Paradee finished in third place on the vault with a 9.425 and was also third on the balance beam with a 9.25. Sherwin ended up fifth on the bars with an 8.125.

Schedule: Friday – 4A team and all-around are from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. 3A/2A/1A team and all-around are from 6:20 p.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday – All individual event finalists compete from 11:20 a.m. until 3 p.m.

2012 team champions: 4A – Mead. 3A/2A/1A – Enumclaw.

Tickets: Daily passes are $15 for adults, and $11 for students and senior citizens. Weekend passes are $23 for adults, and $17 for students and senior citizens.
