With football playoffs on the horizon, the Todd Beamer Titans know it’s time to roll.

“For the fourth year in a row now, we’re right where we want to be as far as competing for the league or division championship,” said Todd Beamer football head coach Darren McKay.

The Titans nabbed the NPSL Mountain Division title with last Friday’s 29-13 win against Auburn Riverside.

Beamer, with an overall record of 6-2 and 4-1 division, could become North Puget Sound League champions with a win at Friday’s game against Auburn Mountainview.

“Friday’s game is for seeding,” said McKay. “So whoever wins is the No. 1 seed in the North Puget Sound League, out of all three divisions, and the loser is the No. 3 seed for the NPSL.”

Beamer won the league championship title two years ago in 2016.

This season brought a new divide of league teams, placing Todd Beamer in the NPSL 4A Mountain division against Kennedy Catholic, Kentwood, Tahoma, Auburn Riverside and Enumclaw.

“It was really a hard fought game against Enumclaw,” McKay said about the Oct. 12 game. Several Titan players agreed Enumclaw is their toughest competition. “I think both teams are a little banged up because it was a physical game.”

Beamer is the host of the week 10 district playoff game with the opposer to be determined.

If Beamer proves victorious this coming Friday night against Auburn Mountainview, then the Titans will host the winner of Skyline vs. Inglemoor.

If Beamer loses, they will welcome the loser of the Glacier Peak vs. Mount Vernon battle.

“We’ve had two really close games the last two years,” McKay said. Two years ago, Beamer beat AMV 10-7, but AMV returned the favor beating the Titans 27-26 last year.

For the next two games, Beamer has home-field advantage.

“We’ve been on the road the last three weeks, so now it gives us a chance to come back home,” McKay said, adding that the team is quite excited to put on their new home uniforms once again.

“We’ve been pretty fortunate … for the most part we’ve been able to stay healthy,” he said. “When you go into the playoffs, usually the two keys determining if you’re in or you’re out is how healthy is your team and the matchup.”

Beamer’s 27-23 victory over Enumclaw earlier in the season was a confidence boost, but the tough 45-49 loss to Kennedy Catholic on Oct. 6 was a humbling experience, said senior running back Billy Vann.

“Even though we had a good game last week, I don’t feel like we’ve played to the best of our ability yet,” Vann said. “As far as everyone dominating all parts of the game.”

Each game brings the team closer, although it’s always nice to take home a win, he said.

“It’s fun to bond with your teammates,” Vann said. “When you’re playing well or winning close games, I don’t think there’s any better feeling. It’s not something you can recreate.”

At this point in the season, said senior quarterback Brandon Niksich, it’s simple: “Win or go home.”

“As seniors, we know this is our last chance to make a statement so we’re going to come to playoffs with everything we have,” he said.

Niksich has already received an offer to play college ball from Simon Fraser University, and many other Titan players are on the radar of various college scouts.

And for some, football is the gateway to more opportunities, such as higher education, said senior left guard Daddee Matila.

“My favorite game was against Kennedy, even though we lost. It showed our great offensive ability,” he said. “We also have great team chemistry. We all click, we know each other’s strengths.”

Consistency is what will bring a championship, McKay said.

“If we continue to score points and play as physical as we have been playing, that would give us a good chance,” he said.
