A Federal Way family was irritated to learn a pumpkin they recently picked was stolen from their porch on Friday.
Jin Kim filed a police report with the Federal Way Police Department after he witnessed the suspect in the act from his home video surveillance.
“When I looked at the video, at the time they took that, I was 8 feet away watching TV,” Kim said.
Kim and his 7-year-old son went to Spooner Farms in Puyallup with his family this October and purchased two pumpkins. His son carved a little one but they saved the $16, 45-pound one to carve later.
Kim said it was a unique pumpkin because it had a long stem the size of his wrist.
But when they found out it was stolen, his son cried. He said it hurt his son’s holiday experience.
“It just makes us not want to do this next year,” he said. “I thought I was in a safe area but, you know, it seems like there’s a lot more of these things happening.”
One of Kim’s friend’s neighbors who lives in Federal Way also had a similar experience but neither had this happen the year prior.
Kim lives in Federal Way near the Walgreens on Hoyt Road.
While all he can do is file a police report and wait, he hopes someone is able to identify the guy who took the pumpkin.
The suspect appears to be a young white male, according to the video footage.
Cathy Schrock, a spokeswoman with the Federal Way Police Department, said Kim’s case is the only pumpkin theft from a porch that’s been reported to the department. But as of January 2013, she noted there’s been 38 cases of property stolen from porches.
Eighteen cases were stolen packages, six cases were stolen flowers, potted plants or trees, four cases were lawn equipment, three were sports equipment and two cases were Christmas ornaments or other holiday decor. Other cases of theft from porches included tools, bikes, seat cushions, shoes and a wallet.
If you can identify the pumpkin thief in the video footage, please contact Federal Way police at 253-835-6700.
