Update: The name of the deceased student has been released.

A Federal Way student-athlete died Tuesday after an outdoor summer conditioning workout at Federal Way High School.

Wednesday afternoon the King County Medical Examiner’s Office released details regarding the death of Allen Harris, 16, a football player at the high school.

According to an autopsy, Harris died of hypertrophic cardio myopathy, a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick, which can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.

Federal Way Public Schools Superintendent Tammy Campbell and the school district released a letter shortly after the tragic death.

“It is with deep sadness that I am sharing that a student-athlete, a member of the Federal Way High School family, passed away suddenly today after participating in a summer conditioning workout at Federal Way High School,” the letter reads in part.

“We have protocols and procedures in place to ensure student safety during summer workouts,” the letter continues. “Over the next 72 hours, we will be suspending all outdoor athletic activities at the middle and high schools to closely verify and examine the protocols we have in place.”

Temperatures on Tuesday hovered around 90 degrees.

The letter from the district expressed deep sadness at the loss.

“Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of this young man, and we are doing all we can to offer help at this time of grief,” the letter concluded.

A vigil is being held for him at the Federal Way High School football field Thursday night at 8:35 p.m.
