It’s been a long time coming for the Federal Way-based Christian Faith Eagles boys basketball program.

For the first time in 19 years, the Eagles are playing at the 1B State Basketball Tournament, which will run through Saturday at the Spokane Memorial Arena. Christian Faith qualified for the tournament last weekend with a win over Cedar Park Christian. During the Eagles’ last trip to state, Christian Faith finished in fourth place at the 1994 Class 2B tournament.

The talented Eagles dominated Cedar Park Christian Saturday night in Stanwood at the 1B Regional Tournament, 75-61. Christian Faith was led by Afari Richardson, who finished with 24 points. The Eagles also got 16 points from Segun Amosun and Vick Toor and 15 from Ignatius Medani. Cedar Park Christian hails from the Mountlake Terrace area

Christian Faith, who is coached by Curt Buford, will open up the 2013 1B Boys Basketball Tournament in Spokane against Pomeroy High School at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Pomeroy qualified for state by beating Odessa-Harrington at Regionals, 60-52.

The Eagles have been hugely efficient on the offensive end of the court. Christian Faith has scored a grand total of 1,687 points in their 24 games for an average of just over 70 points a game. Defensively, the Eagles are giving up just 47 points.

Christian Faith is led by an ultra-talented foursome. Segun Amosun, Vick Toor, Atafi Stinson-Richardson and Ignatius Medani all average in double figures. Amosun and Toor lead the way, both averaging 18.1 a game, Stinson-Richardson follows close behind at 17.2 and Medani is chipping in 11.8 a game.

Amunson is the Eagles’ towering 6-foot-6 senior center has scored in double figures in all but three games this season and also leads the team in rebounding. Toor is a 5-foot-11 guard and poured in a season-best 29 points Jan. 25 against Shorewood Christian, Stinson-Richardson is the Eagles’ 5-8 point guard and Medani is a 6-1 sophomore forward. Stinson-Richardson scored 20 or more points eight times during the season and Medani has been a solid addition after playing in only 14 of the Eagles’ 24 games this year.

Pomeroy, a city with only 1,425 residents in Southeastern Washington, is 18-6 on the season. The Pirates, however, might be a tough matchup for Christian Faith.

Unlike a bulk of the Class 1B teams in the state, Pomeroy can match up with the size of Amosun down low. The Pirates’ have a pair of 6-foot-6 players in Riley Bott and Cody LaMunyan. Bott leads the team in scoring and LaMunyan is third.

The winner of the Christian Faith-Pomeroy game will play in the state semifinals at 9 p.m. Friday against the winner of a game between LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus and Soap Lake. The two losers will play at 2 p.m. Friday.

Christian Faith Schools were founded by Casey and Wendy Treat in 1984. Christian Faith has grown to a preschool through 12th-grade school, graduating 25-plus seniors each spring.
