The Federal Way Police Department on Tuesday night promoted three individuals and appointed three others to corporal.
Mayor Jim Ferrell administered the oath of office to each during the City Council meeting.
Those appointed to corporal were:
• Officer Chris Mickelsen: Mickelsen is an 18-year veteran of law enforcement. While in Federal Way, he has worked in Patrol and Criminal Investigations, with collateral duties as a bomb technician, field training officer, CPR instructor and a member of the total station (crime scene mapping) team. Mickelsen is a graduate of the FBI Hazardous Devices School, FBI Post Blast Investigations School and the Advancing Leadership class of 2014. His wife, Tonya, pinned on his badge.
• Officer Jedidiah Tan: Tan has nine years of law enforcement experience, all of which have been with Federal Way after being hired as an entry-level officer in February 2009. He has worked patrol with collateral duties as a field training officer, total station (crime scene mapping) team member and as a member of SWAT. Tan has a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and a master’s in business administration from University of Washington. His wife, Carol, pinned on his badge.
• Officer Grant Bassett: Bassett has 17 years of law enforcement experience and joined the Federal Way Police Department in November 2006 as a lateral officer from Texas. He has worked as a narcotics K-9 handler at his previous agency and in Federal Way as a contract services officer at The Commons, a traffic motor officer and a detective working both persons and property crimes. His friend and co-worker, Cpl. Oscar Villanueva, pinned on his badge.
Promotions
Detective Bryan Klingele was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Klingele has 22 years of law enforcement experience and is a founding member of the Federal Way Police Department, joining in September 1996 as a lateral officer from the Hoquiam Police Department. He has been a detective in the Special Investigations Unit, specializing in narcotics and human trafficking cases. He was also a corporal in patrol for two years until being selected to return to the Special Investigations Unit. Klingele is a field training officer and a field training officer instructor. He has a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Washington State University. Federal Way Police Chief Andy Hwang pinned Klingele’s badge.
Cpl. Steve Wortman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Corporal Wortman has more than 24 years of law enforcement experience and joined Federal Way as a lateral officer from California in October 2005, with detective, K-9, gang and SWAT experience. As an officer in Federal Way, he worked in patrol and contract services at The Commons and was a field training officer. Wortman was appointed to the position of corporal in January 2015, where he continued his field training officer responsibilities and was selected as a member of the Major Accident Investigation Team. His wife, Kristina, pinned on his badge.
Lt. Tracy Grossnickle was promoted to the rank of commander. Grossnickle has 26 years of law enforcement experience and is a founding member of the Federal Way Police Department having joined in January 1997 as a lateral officer from Colorado. As a lieutenant, Grossnickle has supervised patrol, the traffic unit, criminal investigations, the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, school resource officers and animal services officers. His collateral assignments included overseeing the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), Collision Review Board, emergency vehicle operations training, honor guard, and the field training program. Grossnickle received the Supervisor of the Year Award in 2014. In addition, he has served as an executive board member on the Police Lieutenants Association for nine years. His wife, Karen, who is records specialist in the Federal Way Police Department, pinned on his badge.
