For customers of the 320th Safeway in Federal Way, entering and leaving the busy store has become a bit more complicated as construction of a fuel station has begun.

The new addition to the Safeway store, located on South 320th Street west of Pacific Highway South, will include six double-sided fuel pumps, a 1,000-square-foot “retail kiosk,” a 400-square-foot “vending kiosk,” six new parking stalls and other site improvements, according to Federal Way senior planner Deb Barker.

“We’ve been working on this one for a while,” Barker said. “The building permit was issued Friday (July 8). We’re just real excited to have this project going on.”

The work is being done by SAYBR Contractors of Tacoma, Barker said. SAYBR’s website indicates fuel station projects are one of the company’s specialties. The company has built at least 15 similar stations in Washington and Oregon for Safeway stores.

Darren Gilstrap, project supervisor for SAYBR, said the construction at the 320th Safeway will run through the summer and into the fall.

“It’s generally a twelve-week schedule,” he said. “I would anticipate October as a completion date. As of now, it’s scheduled to open the week of Oct. 12.”
