A 36-year-old Auburn man died Wednesday following a more than nine-hour stand off with police in Federal Way.

The incident began at 11:37 a.m. when officers were dispatched to a report of a hit-and-run collision in the 28200 block of Military Road South. Witnesses reported the man and his passenger, a 36-year-old Bonney Lake woman, both fled on foot from the scene into a nearby neighborhood and attempted to steal a vehicle parked at a residence in the 28100 block of 29th Avenue South.

When officers arrived, the man exited the vehicle and broke into the unoccupied residence, according to a media release from the Federal Way Police Department. The woman was taken into custody.

Officers set a perimeter and attempted to call the male out of the residence, but he refused to comply, according to police. Police were notified there were weapons in the residence and the man may have armed himself with a firearm. Valley SWAT and negotiators responded to assist with the incident.

Negotiators attempted to make contact with the subject multiple times, and SWAT deployed numerous tactics in an attempt to persuade the subject to surrender peacefully, according to police.

More than nine hours after the incident began, SWAT officers made entry into the residence and found the man in a crawl space, police reported. The man fired his weapon at the SWAT officers who were forced to return fire, according to police.

“It is unclear at this time if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or by officer gunfire,” the media release said.

This incident is being investigated by the Valley Investigation Team.
