Students at Totem Middle School will learn more about coding this month as part of an international initiative called the Hour of Code.
The weeklong event serves to demystify computer science for educators and students. Sponsored by a nonprofit organization called Code.org, Hour of Code aims to get students interested in computer programming.
Coding helps reinforce math skills, analytical and deductive reasoning. It also encourages attention to detail and many other skills. Many educational experts believe that literacy in reading, writing and math will not be enough for future generations. Computer programming, or coding, is a beneficial skill for success in the future. Code is what powers so much of what we interact with on a daily basis, from cell phones to cars.
By the year 2020, it is estimated there will be 1 million more jobs in computer science than students graduating with computer science degrees, according to Federal Way Public Schools.
