The Federal Way Police Department promoted four members of its force, and the officers were sworn in at the Sept. 19 City Council meeting. Keith Schmidt and Mike Wedel were promoted to lieutenants, and Eric Davis and Shaun Daniels were promoted to corporals.

Lt. Keith Schmidt

Schmidt is a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, originally serving with the Twin Falls Sheriff’s Department in Idaho. He came to Federal Way in April 2004, where he has since worked in a patrol capacity. He was selected as a field training officer in 2006 and held that position through 2015. In 2014, Schmidt was awarded our highest policing honor, the Medal of Valor, for his courageous actions during an active-shooter incident. In 2015, he was both appointed to the position of corporal and selected as a firearms instructor with the Force Training Unit. He assumed the role of acting lieutenant in November of 2016, supervising patrol officers.

Lt. Mike Wedel

Wedel is an 18-year veteran of law enforcement. He came to Federal Way as a lateral police officer in 2007. Previously, he served as a deputy sheriff with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in California for eight years. In 2010, Wedel was selected for the Federal Way PD Bomb Unit, and he later graduated from the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School. He worked as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Section, focusing on felony property crime investigations from 2013-14. He was appointed to the position of corporal in 2015 and is a graduate of the 2017 Advancing Leadership Program.

Corporal Eric Davis

Davis is a 24-year veteran of law enforcement and has served Federal Way PD in a patrol capacity for nearly two decades. Prior to his service here, he worked for five years as a deputy sheriff in Union County, Arkansas. Beyond his law enforcement experience, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from 1990-99, where he earned a Combat Action Ribbon during a deployment to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Storm. He has held the position of field training officer since 2002, was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service in 2003, and earned the highly regarded title of Master Defensive Tactics Instructor in 2007.

Corporal Shaun Daniels

Daniels is a 12-year veteran of law enforcement. He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from California Lutheran University in 2005. Upon graduation, he was hired as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, where he worked from 2005-12. Daniels came to Federal Way PD as a lateral police officer in late 2012 and was selected as a firearms instructor with the Force Training Unit in 2013. Because of his actions during an active-shooter incident in 2014, he was awarded the highest policing honor, the Medal of Valor. He has also served as a field training officer since 2015.
