PREP SPORTS WRAP: Beamer baseball finishes second, playoffs next

The Todd Beamer Titans baseball team continued their impressive late-season push with a 1-0 win over Rogers in their South Puget Sound League South Division regular season finale Friday.

The Todd Beamer Titans baseball team continued their impressive late-season push with a 1-0 win over Rogers in their South Puget Sound League South Division regular season finale Friday.

The win moved Beamer (11-5 SPSL South) into second-place in the division and earned them a shot at the Tahoma Bears in the SPSL Tournament. The Titans and Bears, who finished second in the SPSL North, will play for the league’s third/fourth seeds into the West Central/Southwest District Tournament. The game will be around 7 p.m. at Heritage Field in Puyallup on Friday, May 4. The game will follow a game between Graham-Kapowsin and Kentlake, which kicks off at 4 p.m.

Against Rogers, Scott Sunitsch was impressive on the mound, picking up the win and giving up just three hits. The win moved Sunitsch to 3-0 on the season and continued the impressive pitching that the Titans have displayed all year.

The Beamer pitching staff ended the regular season with an ultra-impressive  earned-run average of 2.19 and an opponents batting average of just .218. The Titan staff has given up only 87 hits in 109 innings this season.

Beamer leadoff hitter Lawyer Braun scored the only run of the game in the top of the third inning against Rogers. The Titans had only five hits on the day.

Federal Way — The Eagles finished their season with an impressive 4-0 shut out of Graham-Kapowsin Saturday. Senior Darrien Moran threw a two-hitter and struck out seven in his seven innings of work.

The win moved Federal Way to 7-9 in the SPSL South Division, which was good enough for a tie for sixth place. They were 8-10 overall on the season.

Moran was also 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Zack Hobbs, Derek Klaas and Chris Shimer also contributed two hits each for the Eagles.

Jefferson — The Raiders finished one spot out of the postseason in the SPSL North with a 6-10 league record. Top-ranked Kentwood remained unbeaten on the season with a 13-2 win over TJ Tuesday in their season finale.

No details were reported about the game.

Decatur — The Gators were beaten by Auburn Mountainview, 6-3, Friday and finished the SPSL 3A regular season at 3-11. Kyle Robbins finished the game 2 for 3 with a solo home run for Decatur.

 

SOFTBALL

Jefferson — The Raiders (11-3 SPSL North, 13-3 overall) won their eighth SPSL North game in a row Tuesday over the Tahoma Bears, 4-3, in eight innings. Jefferson currently sits third in in the SPSL North behind Kentlake (11-2) and Tahoma (11-2) with three games remaining.

Against Tahoma, the Raiders tallied a run in the top of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead and senior Katie Jackson held the Bears scoreless in the bottom of the inning to get the win. Jackson threw all eight innings for TJ, allowing only five hits.

Offensively, the Raiders were led by Lexi Goranson and Michaela Patton. The pair both finished 2 for 4 with a double and a run.

Jefferson also downed Kentridge on Saturday, 8-5 and Kent-Meridian Friday, 16-2.

Against Kentridge, Greenheck and Patton both finished with two RBIs and Reno Whitcomb was 2 for 3 with two runs. Rocky Hale earned the win on the mound.

Against Kent-Meridian, Nicole Greenheck finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Jackson was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and also threw a two-hitter on the mound, striking out nine.

Beamer — The Titans fell to the Emerald Ridge Jaguars Friday, 9-1. The loss dropped Beamer to 9-6 in the SPSL South with one league game remaining.

The Titans had only four hits on the day and Analee Scott tallied Beamer’s only run after finishing 1 for 3 with a stolen base.
