Federal Way police are searching for the suspect who shot and killed a 21-year-old man on Saturday.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on Wednesday that Davary V. Hicks died of multiple gunshot wounds.
“[He] was sweet, generous, like-minded and always had the biggest heart and reached out to anyone who needed it,” said Brandon Bernoff, who has known Hicks since elementary school but became friends good friends with him while attending Thomas Jefferson High School.
Police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said Hicks was at a gathering in the 32100 block of 46th Place Southwest when he was shot following a confrontation over alleged stolen property.
Bernoff said the gathering was a party and the confrontation started over an iPhone, Xbox and possibly other items taken.
“He went to confront them about it but ended up losing his life,” Bernoff said. “… We just want justice for him and his family.”
Hicks was transported to Harborview Medical Center after police arrived at approximately 3:30 a.m. He died from his injuries at 5 p.m.
Once on scene, detectives determined the shooting was not random. Schrock said witnesses are cooperating with detectives by providing details of the suspect.
About a half-hour after police arrived, residents in the 4200 block of Southwest 323rd Street called 911 to report hearing a man enter Lake Lorene. South King Fire and Rescue conducted a search of the area but only found exit tracks near the water. Schrock said detectives are unsure if the tracks are related to the shooting, however.
Detectives are working on active leads, but anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to submit tips at safecityfw.com.
To help raise money for Hicks’ funeral expenses, Bernoff created a GoFundMe page for Hicks’ family.
“They’re in desperate need for help,” Bernoff said. “So I made this GoFundMe page to help with anything the family needs, such as funeral costs and the whole nine yards. I’m doing my best, and remember anything counts – $1, $2, $3 – anything.”
