The Decatur Gator wrestling team stayed unbeaten in the South Puget Sound League Central Division — barely. The Gators squeaked by the Todd Beamer Titans Wednesday night, 37-36.
The victory moved Decatur to 2-0 in the Central Division, which includes Auburn Riverside, Curtis and the four Federal Way district schools.
The Gators dominated the middle weights during the dual meet with the Titans. Decatur won all five matches from 135 to 160 pounds, including four pins. The Gators picked up falls from Jerry Doran (135), Eric Godfrey (145), Roland Gaydosh (152) and Dylan Aparis at 160.
The Gators also got a big six-point pin from Matt Turner at 215 pounds over Dylan Steiger in 1:06 and an 8-2 decision from Justin Hartinger at 119 pounds.
Beamer also won seven matches during the meet, including five by pin and two decisions, just like Decatur.
But the difference in the match came at 140 pounds. That’s where the Gators’ Lance Gibson won a major decision, 19-11, over Matt Jeroma. In high school wrestling, a major decision win earns four team points, compared to three for a regular decision.
The Titans’ pins came from Stephanie Acorda at 103 pounds, Deshar House at 125, Kevin Oyer at 171, Conner Gleason at 189 and Brandon Barcelona at 285. Tre Uson won a 4-0 decision over Rad Krysa at 112 and Aron Set-Heit beat Decatur’s Tyler Thomas, 7-6, in the most competitive match of the night.
The Thomas Jefferson Raiders rolled over the Auburn Riverside Ravens, 46-30, in an SPSL Central dual meet Wednesday night.
The Raiders got pins from Mike Roybal (112), Tyler Jones (119), Kyle McIntosh (152), Zeke Nistrian (171) and Zak Walin (285). Jefferson also got decision victories from Ty Zumwalt (135), Ivan Mukomol (140) and Paul Johnson (160).
Federal Way dropped a non-league match against Highline Wednesday, 51-23. The Eagles got wins from Anthony Pena (103), Anthony Lehto (130), Langly Ngov (140), Michael Delk (145), Roderick Jones (215) and Alex Shelton (285).
Swimming
The Decatur boys swimming program dropped a pair of SPSL South Division meets against Emerald Ridge and Curtis. The Gators were beaten by Emerald Ridge Wednesday, 107-76, and lost to Curtis, 125-63.
Against Emerald Ridge, the Gators picked up individual event wins from Sean Sobus in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.02) and 500 free (5:47.54), Tanner Brotherton in the 50 free (23.15) and 100 free (53.88) and Blake Zimmerman in diving (144.10 points).
Brotherton picked up the lone Decatur event wins against Curtis after winning the 50 free (23.24) and 100 free (51.04).
