Entering the third race of an already competitive series, the VW Jetta TDI Cup will make it’s only stop on the West Coast at Portland International Raceway on Sunday.

And Federal Way resident David Jurca will come to the Pacific Northwest as the series’ points leader.

The Federal Way High School graduate won the second round of the Jetta TDI Cup in May at the Mosport International Raceway in Ontario, Canada to take over the points lead.

Jurca finished fourth in the first race of the season in Virginia.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series is an innovative approach to motorsports. Jurca and the rest of the series’ drivers, use 30 factory-prepared and managed 2009 clean-diesel Jetta TDIs.

Volkswagen’s goal is to find the driver with the most talent and help them break into the world of professional motorsports. The Jetta TDI Cup series, the first all clean-diesel race series, is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing Inc.

In the end, the winner of the race series will be awarded $100,000 from Volkswagen to aid them in their next steps as a professional racer. An additional $150,000 will be given to the winner if he or she signs a contract with a professional level team within six months of winning the Jetta TDI Cup series.

“These clean diesel vehicles are going to bring a whole new element of racing to an area that already has a significant interest in the environment. We’re thrilled to be headed west and Portland’s dedication to clean living is a perfect fit for Volkswagen,” said Clark Campbell, motorsport manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Our drivers have had a bit of a break since the last race, and we’re excited to be back and ready to hit the track in Portland.”

The series features eight total races and will run next Aug. 14-17 in Lakeville, Conn.
