I am annoyed with you. The Mirror of Sept. 24 has a front page picture of a nun along with the headline of the play “Late Nite Catechism” playing at the Knutzen Family Theatre.

Why did that story deserve front page coverage? This play is a spoof on Catholics. Would you ever give the same coverage to a spoof on Mormons? Or Baptists? Or Methodists?

Frankly, I think this shows your bias. You know, too, that Catholics will let you get away with it. That’s a shame.

I admit that my sense of humor when it comes to criticizing nuns is very short.

In 1928, I started school in a one-room country school in Minnesota. There were 17 kids and one teacher. The teacher was a young girl who had a high school education and one year at a teachers college. What I remember most is that she had no interest in math. She also moved me from the first grade to the fifth grade because there were no other kids in the second, third or fourth grades.

For the seventh and eighth grades, my parents moved me to a parochial school where my teacher was Sr. Emily. She realized my shortcomings and took special effort to bring me up to the level of the other students.

Later in life, I ended up with a degree in engineering from Oregon State University and after 30 years with Weyerhaeuser Co., I retired with the title of Director of Plant Engineering. None of this would have been possible without the help of Sr. Emily.

The show is beloved by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Otherwise I doubt it would have been playing in theatres throughout the country for over 20 years. Furthermore, we have group bookings from a dozen Catholic churches in our region.”
