Family of murder victim reaching out to Federal Way community

The family of Federal Way's third recent murder victim isn't shying away from the city they embraced; rather, they're asking the city to embrace them when they need it most.

The family of Federal Way’s third recent murder victim isn’t shying away from the city they embraced; rather, they’re asking the city to embrace them when they need it most.

Those who knew and loved Adam Gutierrez, the 30-year-old Navy veteran who was shot to death while walking his dog, invited the community to the candlelight vigil held three days after his death. Gutierrez’s parents spoke freely and emotionally at an emergency Federal Way City Council meeting last Thursday, two days after the killing.

And Tuesday, with Gutierrez’s father in the audience, the Federal Way City Council opened their regular meeting by a showing a video, made by Gutierrez’s wife, that spoke directly to the deaf community and to citizens of Federal Way.

In sign language, Marianne Gutierrez urged watchers to stay safe, report suspicious activity to the police, and report any information on her husband’s murder.

She also had a message for Federal Way.

“We need to fix our community,” she signed. “We need to find the problem and come together as a community, a real community, and help each other. I don’t want another person to lose their life this way. I don’t want another family to have to go through this grief.

“Adam trusted Federal Way, and then this happened to him. So, now I’m putting my trust in all of you.”

The family has also established a gofundme.com page to help Marianne Gutierrez, with 20 percent of the total raised to be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project in Adam’s name. The fundraising campaign will run through May 26 “to bring closure to this campaign the same way we’re bringing some closure to Adam’s friends and family.”

Adam Gutierrez’s funeral will be held May 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ’s Church in Federal Way (941 S. Dash Point Rd.). According to his aunt, Jana Krahner, “it will be open to all,” with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. The Military Presentation will be afterwards at 1:30 p.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th St., Kent), and it too is open to all.

Police have not identified suspects in any of last week’s murders. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Federal Way Police Department at 253-835-2121 or on the department’s anonymous tip website, www.safecityfw.com.

Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound (1-800-222-8477) is also accepting anonymous tips and is offering a reward for information that leads to arrests.
