The following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:
Man makes threat with handgun during bar fight: At 1:36 a.m. on March 6 at 35509 21st Ave. SW, police responded to a fight at Jersey’s Sports Bar. Before they arrived, the fight had moved into the parking lot. A cook at the bar said in the beginning of the fight a man pulled a handgun from his waistband and was waiving it around. However, he was gone when officers arrived and could not be identified. Witnesses reported those involved in the fight appeared “extremely intoxicated.”
Person’s car labeled with sticker: At 1:04 a.m. on March 6 in the 32300 block of Seventh Ave. SW, a person called police to report that someone put a sticker on his or her car that said “b**** car.”
Boy flips off cop: At 12:05 p.m. on March 6 in the 1000 block of S. 324th Place, a police officer was driving in his patrol car and was flipped off by an 11- to 13-year-old boy walking on the sidewalk. The boy was with a smaller boy and laughed as he did it. When the officer drove by, he didn’t say anything to them but it “made [him] wonder why someone at such a young age would already be acting in this manner.” The officer decided to take the opportunity to counsel the boys and make a “positive police interaction” with them. He made a U-turn and returned to the boys’ location. The smaller boy ran away and the bigger boy, the one who flipped off the cop, tried to avoid the officer.
The officer got out of his car and walked up to the boy. The boy’s first response was “Why?” and the officer responded that he wanted to talk to him about his conduct. The boy then asked if he was being detained to which the officer said he was not. When the officer asked why he thought it was OK to flip off a police officer, the boy replied “because I don’t f*** with cops” and started to walk away.
The officer continued to “try to have a positive police interaction” with the boy, but he only made it worse. The boy continued to say things such as “go back to your car” and “I don’t get with pigs.”
As the boy started to walk toward his friend, the officer noticed he was getting ready to jaywalk. The officer “gave him some parting advice about not jaywalking” and the boy complied and met his friend via sidewalk. The officer did not identify the boys during his interaction.
Roommates fight at mall: At 12:15 p.m. on March 6 at 1901 S. Commons Way, an officer witnessed two roommates get into a fight in the parking lot of The Commons mall. One roommate punched the other multiple times and was arrested for fourth-degree assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Man attempts to sexually assault woman after online meeting: At 10:07 p.m. on March 6 in the 31700 block of Gateway Center Blvd., a 45-year-old woman reported a 50-year-old male tried to sexually assault her, but she was able to fight him off and run away. The two met online and had planned to meet in Federal Way. The case is under investigation.
‘Pastor’ rips off local business: At 6:25 p.m. on March 6 at 34726 31st Court SW, a business owner called police to report that a man from Norfolk, Virginia, contacted him requesting his business provide printed merchandise for a political campaign. The merchandise cost $30,000. Banking on the man’s position as a “pastor,” the owner fulfilled the order and shipped the merchandise. However, the pastor never paid and stopped communication. The business owner researched the man and identified several other similar cases in which he didn’t pay employees or contractors.
Girl committed for suicidal threats: At 10:02 p.m. on March 6 in the 35700 block of 16th Ave. S., a girl was involuntarily committed after her parents called 911 to report she had grabbed a knife and started to cut her wrists. The three were in an argument at the time.
Rocks thrown at Olive Garden: At 8:51 p.m. on March 5 at 35030 Enchanted Parkway S., a person was arrested for throwing rocks at Olive Garden’s windows. Police located the suspect and employees of the restaurant confirmed his or her identity. At least four windows were damaged.
Witness sees man attempt to abandon child: At 9:58 p.m. on March 5 in the 1600 block of Dash Point Road, a male reported witnessing a man leave his vehicle with a child in his arms, place the child on a sidewalk, and then walk back to the car. The child followed the man and the man again picked up the child and placed him on the sidewalk. The witness called out to the man, who responded by shrugging his shoulders and picking up the child and returning to his car. The vehicle left heading west on Dash Point Road. The witness recorded some of the incident. Police checked the area but couldn’t find the vehicle, which was described as a dark-colored compact car.
Young man dies of suspected drug toxicity: At 7:55 a.m. on March 4 in the 32300 block of Eighth Ave. SW, police were dispatched to investigate the death of an 18-year-old man. The man had no known medical issues, and it was unclear if he had been drinking or using drugs. The teen was found on his bed when he was discovered and police don’t believe his death was suspicious.
In interviews, police learned the man lived with a woman who acted as somewhat of a foster parent to him. The male had a history of mental health issues and running away but chose to live with the woman after he turned 18. He rented a room and had a history of drug use, but the woman said he had turned his life around and was near graduating from a massage school. The night before his death, the male hung out with his friend, went to a friend’s house, and then returned home to hang out in his room and play on his phone.
An interview with his friend revealed he had taken ketamine and some Percocet pills. He told her he felt “drunk” and had thrown up twice but felt better afterwards. King County Medical Examiners investigated the scene and located Xanax pills in the male’s pocket. There was one other pill with the others, but it could not be identified at the time. In addition to those, an investigator found a suspected fentanyl and fentanyl packaging in the garbage.
Girl’s bruising causes alarm: At 12:54 p.m. on March 4 in the 35000 block of Eighth Ave. SW, a school nurse contacted police to report a potential child abuse case. A 15-year-old girl had come to the nurse’s office to get ice for some bruising on her left arm. But the bruising on her bicep was “deep” and there was additional bruising on her wrist, consistent with someone roughly grabbing her arm. The girl had a Child Protective Services case from 2014 in which her sister poured scalding hot water on her chest and neck area. A security officer responded and questioned the girl about her bruising, but she denied abuse and said her injuries happened when she fell down after “messing around” with her friends on the soccer field. The officer photographed her injuries and forwarded the information to Child Protective Services.
Police suspect infant abuse: At 9:09 a.m. on March 4 in the 27600 block of Pacific Highway S., Federal Way police were notified by Seattle police that a 3-month-old baby was brought to Seattle Children’s Hospital on March 3 for injuries police believe were caused by child abuse in Federal Way. The case is open and active.
Auto repair shop burglarized: At 2:27 p.m. on March 4 at 34506 21st Ave. SW, unknown suspects burglarized Northshore Auto Repair by damaging a fence to enter the rear lot of the business and entered three privately owned vehicles. One item from one of the vehicles was stolen. Police also found a damaged lock leading to another fenced area. The case was deemed inactive after police exhausted all leads.
Man arrested for drug possession: At 9:29 p.m. on March 4 in the 31000 block of Pacific Highway S., a 38-year-old man was arrested for drug possession. Police were dispatched after the man was reported to have threatened physical harm to a Dollar Tree manager. An officer found the man, who was described as “tweaking.” The man declined to talk with the officer but was told he was not free to leave. He continued to walk away and the officer grabbed his arm and put his hands behind his back, eventually pushing him to the ground. The officer told him he was under arrest and the man continued resisting. Police later found drug paraphernalia consistent with smoking methamphetamine, a knife, a needle and syringe and 1.5 grams of methamphetamine in a plastic bag.
Homeless man arrested for drug possession: At 3:05 p.m. on March 3 in the 34900 block of Pacific Highway S., police arrested a homeless 55-year-old man after witnessing him package up crystal meth inside a tent. Approximately $250 in cash and 9.6 grams of meth were seized. Police were called to a wooded area after nearby business owners made complaints about tents being illegally set up in the area. As police were warning the “trespassers” they had one week to move out, an officer happened across two men inside a tent, splitting up drugs into different bags. Charges have not yet been filed with the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
Men intimidate woman walking home: At 8:15 p.m. March 3 in the 32500 block of Pacific Highway S., a woman was walking home along Pacific Highway when she encountered three males. They started walking near her, which made her uncomfortable. One of the men pulled out a knife and held it in his hand as he walked but didn’t threaten her. The woman walked into a nearby Goodwill store and asked a woman there to borrow a phone so she could call a relative to come meet her so they could walk home together. But the woman misunderstood her and thought the woman had threatened her with knife, so she called 911. After she told police what happened, the woman got a courtesy ride home. Police detained three males near the store, one of whom was cited for drug paraphernalia, but eventually all were released.
Boy with imagination gets police called on mom: At 7:19 p.m. on March 2 in the 2200 block of S. Star Lake Road, Child Protective Services called police to request a welfare check on a child. The child told his teachers at school that he has access to guns and bullets and that he holds the gun in front of a mirror when his mother isn’t home. Police spoke to the boy’s mother, who said she owns a gun but it is locked up and her son cannot touch it. She let the officer walk through her apartment, but nothing suspicious was found.
Intoxicated man committed after found near road: At 5:25 p.m. on March 1 in the 30800 block of 28th Ave. S., a man was involuntarily committed after he was found extremely intoxicated and laying within 12 feet of a roadway.
