The following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:
Car bursts into flames: At 6:53 a.m. on Feb. 21 in the 34800 block of Pacific Highway S., an officer saw a disabled vehicle blocking traffic on Pacific Highway S. As the officer approached, flames could be seen underneath the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was on the side of the road. He told police that his car stalled and he smelled smoke when he tried to restart it. The flames spread to the entire engine compartment before firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames. The car was towed from the scene. No one was injured.
Man tries to hang himself: At 11 a.m. on Feb. 21 in the 31600 block of 23rd Ave. S., a man tried to hang himself from a security fence at a parking garage using a shoelace. The man called 911 and said he wanted to die and was going to hang himself. He was involuntarily committed.
Meth found during arrest: At 11:32 a.m. on Feb. 21 in the 2300 block of S. 320th St., a man was arrested for an out-of-state extraditable warrant. During the arrest, officers found that the suspect had over five grams of methamphetamine in his possession.
Man fights mother’s boyfriend: At 1:51 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the 34000 block of 22nd Place SW, a man told police that he was assaulted by his mother’s boyfriend. He told police that he was pushed and strangled. He then told police that they were being monitored by the Queen of England. During their investigation of the incident, police found that the man was the first one to strike during the dispute with his mother’s boyfriend. He was held down to the ground during the fight for everyone else’s safety. Police did not believe the man was in the right state of mind and he was restrained at a hospital for safety concerns.
Teens robbed at gunpoint: At 9:20 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the 30200 block of First Place S., police responded to a robbery in progress. Multiple males had entered a house and robbed the occupants at gunpoint. The occupants were teenagers. Two of them lived at the residence, but their parents were not home at the time. They knew the two teens with the robbers, but not the adult males who pulled off the robbery.
The teens were playing video games together originally, but as the older males began to leave, one began to ask where his phone was. The suspect then brandished a gun and began to strike one of the teens while accusing them of stealing his phone. They took the teen’s phone when it fell out of his pocket and also stole two video game consoles and multiple pairs of shoes. The teen stated that the other teens did not take part in the robbery, despite one of them having a gun prior to the robbery. The robbers left in a vehicle and were not located at that time.
Apartment complex evacuated: At 10:52 a.m. on Feb. 20 in the 31000 block of 16th Place SW, officers responded to serve a man with a protection order. They found that the subject had multiple outstanding warrants, including one for domestic violence and strangulation from Spokane. The suspect was considered armed and dangerous. Police confirmed that the male was hiding inside an apartment complex and temporarily evacuated the other residents in the building. A phone call to the suspect was made and he surrendered himself to police without incident. He was taken to SCORE jail where he awaited transfer to Spokane. He was also served the protection order.
Gun stolen from vehicle: At 12:03 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the 30400 block of First Place S., a man called police to report that his 9mm pistol had been stolen from his unsecure vehicle along with five pistol magazines. He gave police the serial number and the pistol came back clear. There are currently no leads in the theft.
Man finds bullet in roof: At 12:02 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the 2700 block of SW 322nd Place, a man reported that he noticed a hole in his roof on the first floor of his home. After investigating the hole, the man found a spent bullet lodged into his roof. The bullet was recovered and given to police. The incident occurred sometime between Thanksgiving and February 20. The bullet was booked into evidence with a request to have it tested in the lab.
Man scammed by fake homeowner: At 2:54 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the 33200 block of 35th Ave. SW, a man reported that he was a victim of fraud when he attempted to rent a home after seeing an ad online. After spending $800 for the security deposit, he found out that whomever he sent the money to did not own the home. They asked him to send another $800 to an unknown address in Nigeria, and he then caught on to the scam. Police have not yet determined who was responsible for the scam.
Man loses over $10,000 to fraud: At 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the 2200 block of S. Star Lake Road, a man reported that unknown suspects told him that he won $9.5 million from a lottery at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and told him to wire money to Jamaica and New York before his prize money could be claimed. He sent $7,000 to a man named “Tony.” He then received another call from a man named “Dave,” who told him to stop communicating with Tony and that he was with the Fraud Commission Department of the U.S. Government. He then was told he did win the money, but needed to send another $3,200 to Jamaica. When he took his amplifiers to a pawn shop, the clerk told him it was likely fraud and the man should call police.
Woman committed after overdose: At 10:27 p.m. on Feb. 19 in the 1100 block of SW 334th Place, police responded to a report of a possible assault. Upon arrival, police found that no assault had taken place. A female was incoherent due to an overdose. She was involuntarily committed.
Man runs in front of police vehicle: At 5:18 p.m. on Feb. 19 in the 33000 block of First Way S., a man ran in front of a police vehicle while the officer was on patrol. When the officer asked the man what he was doing, he said he needed help and police were chasing and shooting at him. He then said his family was kidnapped. He told police that he was in pain and scared. The man then told police that he had been using drugs and he wanted help. He was involuntarily committed.
Woman calls police for Instagram post: At 9:02 a.m. on Feb. 18 in the 2800 block of SW 320th St., a woman called police to report a suspicious post on her son’s friend’s Instagram account. A Decatur High School student posted a photo of a revolver and ammunition and then two more photos suggesting that he was suffering from depression. Although no threats were made, police contacted the student at his residence since he was listed as absent on that day. He told police he removed the photos because someone could be alarmed. Police found that he did not suffer from depression and that he enjoyed target shooting with adults. School officials had already counseled the student prior to police investigation.
Arrests made for counterfeit money: At 6:24 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the 1200 block of S. 320th St., police responded to a forgery in progress. One suspect was observed using a counterfeit bill to purchase merchandise from a store. The suspect was detained. Another suspect was identified and also detained at the scene. Police obtained written consent to search the first suspect’s vehicle. Evidence was seized from the vehicle and provided by the reporting party. Both suspects were booked into SCORE jail.
Gunshots heard in neighborhood: At 11:33 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the 28600 block of 25th Place S., multiple people called police to report gunshots going off. One witness told police that a Honda or Acura pulled up in front of a house and the passenger started firing what he believed to be a handgun at the house. No one answered the door to the house, but a neighbor came out and told them the house belonged to his sister. He stated he didn’t know why someone would shoot her house. Police informed him that his vehicle had also been damaged in the shooting.
They were able to contact the owner and she told police she did not know why anyone would shoot her home. Bullet holes were found in the side of the home. Another neighbor told police that he’d recently been robbed and may know someone who could have done it, but did not give a statement. There were no more witnesses or evidence in the case.
Wallet found containing meth: At 8:22 a.m. on Feb. 17 in the 100 block of SW Campus Drive, Winco Foods called police for a drug complaint. Employees had found a wallet containing a baggie with methamphetamine. Police contacted the owner of the wallet and she provided a written statement that the meth was hers. The contents of the baggie tested positive for meth. The case was forwarded to SIU.
Man steals from own home: At 10:06 a.m. on Feb. 17 in the 2100 block of S. 373rd Court, police responded to a residential alarm. Upon arrival, police found a subject attempting to leave the area on a bicycle while carrying a visibly heavy duffle bag. Officers contacted the male and checked his identification. They found that his address was the same as the house they had just arrived at. He admitted to taking items from his parents’ home without permission.
Girl chased by unknown male: At 4:48 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the 32200 block of Military Rd. S., a woman called police to report that her 13-year-old daughter told her that she was chased by a white male in his 30s when she exited the school that afternoon. The girl ran to her apartment and the male stopped chasing her. The male left on foot and did not say anything to her. She had never seen the male before. The woman was advised to call police if the man returned.
Couple bring dead baby to hospital: At 9:26 a.m. on Feb. 16 in the 2400 block of 222nd Ave. S., a couple arrived to St. Francis with their 6-month-old son already deceased. According to hospital staff, the baby appeared to have been dead for a few hours. He had multiple suspicious injuries all over his body and his head appeared abnormally large. The couple said they had driven the baby there directly from their house in Des Moines. The investigation was taken over by Des Moines police.
Woman scammed out of thousands: At 2:38 p.m. on Feb. 16 in the 31400 block of 23rd Ave. S., a woman went to the police station to report that she was a victim of fraud. The victim stated she had received a $1,980 check in the mail to be a secret shopper. The victim deposited the check and sent two separate $830 transactions via Western Union. After the transactions were made, the victim found that the original check was stolen. The victim’s losses were approximately $2,000. There is no suspect information.
Drunk man removed from bus: At 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 16 at 23rd Ave. S., a man was removed from a bus for lewd conduct. The man was extremely intoxicated and could not stand up. The man fell on the side of the street and was unable to take care of himself. The man was involuntarily committed by officers and was transported by ambulance to St. Francis.
