Beginning this school year, Federal Way Public Schools’ elementary and secondary students can enter a monthly drawing to read or learn to play chess with Superintendent Tammy Campbell.

In a statement, Campbell said the drawing was inspired by research that shows “chess can enhance a person’s ability to think critically and problem solve.”

When they get back to school, students can pick up entry flyers from their school’s office manager. The completed flyers must be submitted to the office manager by the 15th of each month.

Campbell’s office will contact the winners.

Elementary student winners can choose to read or learn to play chess with Campbell.

Secondary student winners can learn to play chess with Campbell. All students who win will go home with a book and chess board.

The initiative is designed to support the district’s third strategic plan goal, “Active Learners: Engaged, Empowered Critical Thinkers.”
