Federal Way high schools look to increase FAFSA completion numbers

An essential step in order for some students to be career- and college-ready is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA). Currently, fewer than 50 percent of Federal Way Public Schools seniors have completed either the FAFSA or WASFA.

The district’s goal is to have 100 percent of 12th-grade level students complete and submit the application.

Federal student aid programs provided necessary funding to students in the form of grants, work-study, and low-interest loans, and non-federal financial aid such as individual college scholarships.

In order to help students complete the application process, all high schools have scheduled a FAFSA/WASFA Completion Week beginning March 7.

Seniors will complete their FAFSA/WASFA during a scheduled time during the school day.

Parents and guardians are asked to help ensure their 12th-grade students complete the application by sending the required financial information with their student, or by coming to school to complete their portion of the application.

Parents will receive an invitation from their student’s school that provides more detail, including the specific financial information required.
