In annual recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Federal Way resident and karaoke host Cliff Satterwhite will attempt to raise money for charity by singing Garth Brooks’ iconic “Friends in Low Places” for 36 continuous hours.
Last year’s marathon and subsequent week of fundraising drew in almost $5,000. This year, the goal is to raise $10,000.
Although the 76-hour Guinness World Record is in no danger of being broken, Satterwhite’s annual 36-hour effort offers unique challenges of its own. The official Guinness book recognizes several marathon singing records covering more hours, but those records include multiple singers, multiple songs, food breaks and controlled sleep breaks.
“My attempt will feature one singer, one song, no sleep breaks and only a 2-5 minute break between songs for water, food and bathroom,” Satterwhite said. “That’s what sets it apart.
“I learned a lot from last year’s event. How to prepare before the event; what to eat, how much to drink. Everything I learned last year will help me make it through this year’s event.”
Satterwhite is singing to raise $10,000 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, which bills itself as “the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities with a shared determination to finish the fight against breast cancer.” Funds raised through the group’s efforts benefit the American Cancer Society and fund breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those affected by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it is most treatable.
Satterwhite’s singathon starts at midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and continues until noon on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Stars Bar and Grill (31216 Pacific Highway S.). He’s using to raise funds and pledges with a Go Fund Me account at www.gofundme.com/2fkp43jq.
