Two people were stabbed at the Old Country Buffet restaurant after a bloody fight broke out among a large family group.

The incident took place about 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the restaurant, located on South 320th Street across from The Commons Mall.

A dispute broke out among a family gathering of about 25 individuals, according to police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock. The two stabbing victims, both male, were transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical but stable condition. One victim suffered a 3-inch puncture wound to his chest and a laceration on his index finger. The other victim suffered a 5-inch laceration to the top of his head, along with puncture wounds to his left leg and left tricep muscle.

According to the police report, the victims were brothers. A witness said one of the suspects attacked the brothers with a small paring knife from his front jean pocket. The situation allegedly stemmed from ongoing disputes among the family members.

According to the charging documents, the entire banquet room at Old Country Buffet was in disarray. There were food particles, vomit, broken plates, blood, bloody clothes, and chairs and tables turned upside down. There were two heavy pools of blood in the banquet room, and a wall was heavily saturated with blood and smear marks.

Three suspects are in custody. Joseph Leapai, 26, and his brothers John Leapai, 28, and Faapouaita Leapai, 32, were charged with first-degree assault. A bail hearing was held Monday for three men. Bail was set at $50,000 for Faapouaita Leapai and set at $200,000 for the other two suspects. Arraignment is set for 9 a.m. March 12 at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
