Beamer beats Kentwood for SPSL title | Boys soccer playoffs this weekend

A hot opponent in a title game is always a challenge. The Todd Beamer High School boys soccer team was more than up for the challenge on Wednesday, handing the Kentwood Conquerors their first loss in 13 games — and securing the SPSL title in the process.

A hot opponent in a title game is always a challenge. The Todd Beamer High School boys soccer team was more than up for the challenge on Wednesday, handing the Kentwood Conquerors their first loss in 13 games — and securing the SPSL title in the process.

Troy Peterson scored the only and winning goal for Beamer in the 78th minute on an assist from Austin Sweeney. Goalkeeper Nick Bod maintained the clean sheet for the Titans.

With the win, Beamer finished the season 13-0-3 in the SPSL South division, and 14-0-3 overall. The Titans took 45 of 51 points in their 17 games, and look to continue their strong play heading into the playoffs.

The Titans will face Rogers High School of Puyallup in the bi-district playoffs Saturday, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. at the “Art Crate” site at Bethel High School.

In other Federal Way soccer action, the Thomas Jefferson High School Raiders scored early and held on to defeat Emerald Ridge 1-0. The fifth-minute goal by Charles Yi secured a number three seed for the Raiders heading into the playoffs. Yi found the back of the net off an assist from Chase Hanson. John David McClarey kept the clean sheet in goal for the Raiders. The Raiders ended the regular season with a 12-2-2 record in the SPSL North, and a 13-2-2 record, taking 41 points from their 17 games.

TJ will face off with Skyview High School at noon Saturday at Bethel High School.

The Federal Way High School Eagles boys soccer team was on the wrong end of a 1-0 match, conceding a 69th minute goal to Mount Rainier. Rainier’s Marshall Rockwell scored the winner. The Eagles finished the season fourth in the SPSL South, with a division record of 8-5-3 and an overall record of 8-6-3, taking 27 points in this year’s campaign.

While their season wasn’t as strong as their fellow Federal Way schools, the Eagles still earned an eighth seed to the bi-district playoffs Saturday. They will face familiar foe Kentwood at 2 p.m. at Bethel.
