South King Fire and Rescue firefighters have reason to be tired this week. They just finished competing in the 2009 World Police and Fire Games, held in Vancouver, B.C.
The event, which started in 1985, has grown over the years and this year, for the second time, had more than 10,000 athletes participating.
Police officers, firefighters, customs and corrections officers from around the world came out to participate in the sporting event, which ran from July 31 through Aug. 9.
Participants could compete in almost 60 sporting events.
The local boys did quite well in the event, bringing home several medals and high finishes.
The men’s softball team took home the bronze medal in the B Division.
The softball team consisted of Daren DeBoer, Joel Barrett, James Cromwell, Ed DeGagne, Jacob Jones, Tyler Luke, Patrick Mertlich, Brian Moore, Joe Perusee and Sven Schievink.
Steve Bonzer took home 9th in the singles golf category, Paul Mernaugh, Brian Moore and Craig Hanna (from Tacoma) took 5th in the Men’s Open Division Team Triathalon, Jacob Jones took 13th in the downhill Mountain Bike race, Travis McKenney took 12th in the Downhill Mountain Bike Race and bronze in the dual slalom mountain bike, Ed Rickert took 9th in the cycling sprint, 10th in the cycling criterium and silver in the cross country mountain bike race. The man of the hour was Mernaugh, who took silver in the stair climb in full firefighter gear, bronze in the cycling sprint, bronze in the cycling criterium, gold in the cycling time trial, bronze in the cross country mountain bike and gold in the cycling road race.
“Based on the competition I saw, South King should be very proud of these results,” Rickert said in an e-mail announcing the results. “The Games are a magnificent experience.”
