A season-opening trip down south couldn’t have went any better for Thomas Jefferson. The Raiders downed Mountain View High School in Vancouver Saturday, 3-1, in extra innings.
Jefferson’s Gunnar Schubert brought home the go-ahead run to give the Raiders their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Mountain View took a quick 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first, before TJ tied it up with a single run in the sixth, sending the game to extra innings.
Jefferson starting pitcher Travis McCauley was impressive on the mound. McCauley allowed just two hits in four innings of work, striking out six. Sean Dolan earned the win after pitching three innings and allowing three hits. Jordan Price threw the eighth inning to pick up the save.
Schubert led the way offensively, finishing 2 for 4 with the RBI. Michael Ziccarelli finished 1 for 1 and Hunter Henry was 1 for 3 with a double.
Decatur
The Gators lost their season-opener to the Summer Spartans Friday afternoon at home, 7-6, despite a huge offensive day from senior Kyle Robbins. Sumner tallied two runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 6-5 Decatur lead.
Robbins finished the day 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBI for the Gators. Decatur’s Isaiah Hatch suffered the loss on the mound.
Beamer
The Fife Trojans needed only five innings to beat the Todd Beamer Titans Friday in a non-league contest, 11-1. Beamer, who finished in fourth place at last year’s Class 4A Tournament, mustered only four hits during the game. Sophomore Taylor Davis finished 2 for 3 with a double, triple and knocked in the Titans’ lone run. Scott Sunitsch suffered the loss on the mound.
Federal Way
The Eagles dropped their season-opener Friday to the Enumclaw Hornets, 7-1. Enumclaw is coached by former Federal Way head man Eric Fiedler.
Enumclaw took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, which is how it stayed until the top of the fifth inning. That’s when Federal Way tallied its lone run. But Enumclaw scored the final six runs of the game to earn the victory.
