Residents can learn about home composting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Federal Way City Hall at a monthly Green Living Workshop.

Master gardener and garden hotline expert will demonstrate food scraps composting using red wiggler worms as well as backyard composting of yard debris. Residents of all levels of interest and experience are welcome to attend, whether just curious about composting or in need of troubleshooting assistance. Door prizes include a worm bin and a compost bin.

“Residents are interested in worm bin composting for a variety of reasons,” said Jeanette Brizendine, The city’s recycling project manager. “Some want to create great compost for their garden, others want to ensure food scraps do not get sent to the landfill as waste, and others just like it as a neat hobby.”

With the help of grant funds, the city of Federal Way offers discounted food scrap buckets ($5), worm bins ($30) and compost bins ($40-65) to encourage home composting. These can be purchased at Northshore Ace Hardware, 35419 21st Ave SW, and Oriental Garden Center at 30650 Pacific Hwy S.
