Graham L. Malek of Northeast Tacoma was awarded the Police Chief’s City Commendation award Nov. 18 for his apprehension of a purse thief in Federal Way.
Police Chief Brian Wilson presented Malek a metal for his heroic efforts that day. On Sept. 3, Malek was entering Fred Meyer, 33702 21st Ave. S.W., when a man rushed past him. Malek heard someone scream to stop the thief because he had stolen a purse.
Malek took chase. He eventually flagged down a passing motorist, who was willing to give chase in his vehicle, but unwilling to get further involved. When the suspect got stuck jumping over a fence, Malek grabbed and tackled him.
Wilson thanked Malek for his efforts at the regularly scheduled Federal Way City Council meeting. Malek briefly spoke to the council and crowd, joking about his large stature and saying he did not have much of a runner’s physique.
“Tackling him was one of the highlights of my day,” Malek said. “I made sure I landed on him.”
