The fourth annual Federal Way Farmers Market Chili Cook-off, held Sept. 24, raised about $4,000 to benefit Special Olympics Washington and South King Firefighters Foundation.

South King Fire and Rescue and the Federal Way police each pitted five teams against one another in a battle for chili supremacy. The firefighters were hoping to avenge a sweep by the police in last year’s event, which raised more than $3,200 for their two charities.

South King Fire and Rescue’s Shark Pit recaptured first place. Team members are Brad Chaney, Jeff Hamel, Mike D. Lawson, Tyler Wilkins-Haigh and Eric Suckoll. The Shark Pit won first place and the People’s Choice Award in 2008 and 2009 — the first two years of the cook-off’s existence.

Federal Way Police Department’s Weapon of Mass Deliciousness team won second place and the People’s Choice Award. The team consisted of Deputy Chief Andy Hwang, Cmdr. Steve Stan McCall, Cmdr. South King Fire and Rescue’s Megabites team of Joe Ganem, Damon Ganem and Mitch Lee won third place at the Chili Cook-off.

The Federal Way Farmers Market is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays at 31600 20th Ave. S. (near the transit center). The market runs 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the same location through the end of October.
